Many cars have stopped on the way to the University campus, Ullandhaug, located about 4 kilometres outside Stavanger centre, simply to enjoy the view. To the east there is Ryfylke, with its snow-covered mountains towering above a shimmering, blue fjord, and to the west there is the historical bay of Hafrsfjord where Norway was unified in 872 AD. We joke that on a good day, we can almost see England.

For traffic reasons, this stop is not advisable – but this tells us something about the University’s location and natural surroundings.

Ullandhaug was chosen as the location for the future University of Stavanger in the beginning of the 1960s. No less than 300 acres were reserved for the University campus of the future - a testimony to the far-sightedness that characterises our University culture today.

If you live in Stavanger, you can drive to the University in approximately ten minutes. It does not take much longer than that if you wish to bike. Public transport is also extremely efficient and there are frequent departures to and from the campus area.

The three faculties are located at Ullandhaug (main University campus) with the exception of the Department of Music and Dance, which is located in idyllic surroundings in the city centre, near the Stavanger Concert Hall in Bjergsted Park.

Inspiration

Take a break from studies and go for a refreshing and rejuvenating walk or run in the recreational outdoor area of Sørmarka. During winter time, one can even go on a short skiing trip or whiz down the Ullandhaug hillside on a sled.

And if the urge for socialising, shopping  and cultural activities is overpowering – the city centre is only ten-minutes away. We are in no doubt that this can be especially tempting as the weekend approaches. Modesty may be a virtue, but let it be said: no other university in Norway has a view that can compare with ours - and few universities can give you the kind of total package the University of Stavanger offers!
