Since 2007 I have been the Head of the Professional Relations in Welfare Professions research group at the Department of Health Studies, the University of Stavanger. My current research interest relates to health professionals? personal and existential experiences of being confronted with death at work. I'm also involved in a methodology development project (Visual Matrix), alongside Scandinavian and British colleagues. Areas of interest in my research career involve emotional and relational aspects of professional activity. Many of my studies concern the relational worker and special demands for development and growth in occupations where the relationship (i.e. with a student, client, patient) is the most important tool for professional practice. I therefore research emotional and relational conditions for care, as well as the meaning of self-understanding and occupational identity for care practitioners. My particular contribution to this research field has been to introduce a psychosocial perspective on care. Further to this, I also research the conditions for relationships in the teaching profession. My emphasis on emotional aspects of and in the teacher's work has captured a current shortcoming in the professional theoretical landscape. I have made a critical contribution to this research field with a model for a social defense system in schools. Another of my research fields relates to preventive or health promotion strategies aimed at work participation for vulnerable groups, like people with mental health challenges or substance abuse.

Forskningsområder

My research areas relate to: relationship based work, professional development, care, ethics of care, empathy, death, gender, psycho-social research, health promotion strategies, organisational culture, psychosocial health, qualitative methods, reflexive practice.
