11,5 mill NOK in NORHED support to UiS mathematics education project

A UiS project to improve mathematics education in Malawi will receive support by the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED).

The project called Improving Quality and Capacity of Mathematics Teacher Education in Malawi applied for 11,5 mill NOK from NORHED in the first round of call for proposals, which attracted 173 applications from a number of Norwegian higher education institutions. 46 of these will receive funding in this round.

The mathematics education project has been developed in cooperation between researchers and educators of the Department of Education and Sports science coordinated by Associate Professor Arne Jakobsen, and led by Dr. Mercy Kazima of the University of Malawi. The project will be led by the University of Malawi.

The aims of the project are to develop capacity at Chancellor College and Domasi through provision of jointly supervised doctoral studies for 4 staff members plus development of a specialized Master’s course in mathematics education. In addition the project will carry out research into mathematics education, analyse the mathematics teacher education curricula and evaluate the effectiveness of current teacher education programs in mathematics. Continuing professional development for teachers of mathematics will also be analysed and re-developed.

According to Bjarne Garden, Acting Director at Norad’s Department for Global Health, Education and Research, the large number of applications shows the great global demand for funding of research and capacity-building in higher education.
