Oral and written culture

This project studies the relationship between oral and written culture, with focus on experiences from Madagascar.

Madagascar has been used as an example on how categorisation and political thinking can develop even in the absence of a comprehensive written culture. On Madagascar traditional thinking sometimes has gone against literate institutions as education, bureaucracy and legal system.

Norwegian missionaries have been present on Madagascar since 1866, and even prior to this Norwegian traders came to Madagascar. Since there has been a steady increase in governmental contact. The result is a rich material from Norway and Madagascar.
