Thematic areas under the Cooperation Specific Programme include:

- 'Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies'

- 'Environment (including climate change)'
- 'Transport'
- 'Socio-economic sciences and humanities'

There are also “joint calls” between several of the thematic areas under the Cooperation Programme. One of the most important joint calls this year is the call “The Ocean of tomorrow”.
Calls under the Capacities Specific Programme are dedicated to the following Themes:
- 'Research infrastructures'
- 'Research for the benefit of SMEs'
- 'Regions of knowledge'
- 'Research potential'
- 'Science in society'
- 'Activities of international cooperation'
Finally, the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Independent Researcher Grants are intended to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish or consolidate a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe.

The Norwegian Research Council will arrange an information day in Oslo, 31 August, where the different national contact points will inform about this year’s call for proposals under the Seventh Framework Programme. In addition, Sean McCarthy will on 1. September hold his course "How to write a Competitive Proposal for Framwork 7".
