Funds from the Petromaks programme

The University of Stavanger and the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) have received substantial funding for a project on regularity and deliverability in the Norwegian gas transport system.

A total of NOK 20 million has been awarded by the Research Council of Norway and NOK 10 million from Statoil and Gassco for a five-year period.

“This is a substantial and important project,” says Professor Terje Aven at the UiS, who heads the work.

It also involves researchers at the University of Bergen, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the SINTEF research foundation, Statoil, Gassco and CognIT.

The project aims to develop methods for optimising regularity and deliverability in the Norwegian gas production and transport system.

Big potential
“The potential benefits are considerable,” says Prof Aven. “Improving the regularity of gas exports by even a few percentage points would add several billion kroner in value.”

Efforts will be made through the project to fill the gap between existing methods and future requirements created by the liberalisation and integration of the European energy market.

Optimal planning and operation
Particular emphasis is being given to improving predictions of the regularity for the production and transport system, by taking into account pipeline flow and pressure, aging, maintenance and other operational conditions.

A main objective is to contribute to optimal planning and operation of the system in relation to capacity utilisation, maintenance and future infrastructure investment.

Six Ph.D candidates
A total of six research fellowships are planned for the project, of which two will be at the UiS/IRIS.
