Literacy studies - master
Is the book an endangered species? Are sms-messages destroying the English language? What were medieval books like? How do children learn to read and write? Who was Shakespeare and does it matter? What does reading do to our minds?
Literacy studies are the study of reading, writing and the written text in a social and cultural context. Writing is a key factor in social organisation and cultural development, and the medium of a wide range of communication technologies. It is often claimed that the central role of reading and texts is one of the most important characteristics of modern societies.
Our focus is on the English language, and the programme is equivalent to a Masters in English from the point of view of teaching and research competence. It includes literary, linguistic and educational approaches to literacy, and there is a choice between a range of taught modules.
Our students have produced theses on topics ranging from medieval alchemical texts to cookbooks, digital media and second-language writing. All our thesis supervisors are active researchers.
The Masters Programme in Literacy Studies offers a unique, crossdisciplinary approach to the subject of literacy: the study of books, reading, writing and the written text. The programme is run entirely in English, and we aim at providing highquality instruction in a fairly small but dynamic research environment with many international links. Students who have completed the programme will be awarded the title of Master in Literacy Studies. The programme is useful for a wide variety of careers.
