Background
Norway has a long tradition of using the outdoors and nature as part of the curriculum. During the last decades emphasis has been put on developing outdoor education in schools and specific outdoor kindergartens have been established. The international week in Stavanger will offer an introduction to the rationale behind the idea of outdoor education and show examples of this educational approach in pre primary, primary and secondary school.
Programme
- Brief introduction to the school system in Norway
- What is “Outdoor Education”, “Outdoor Life”, a “Nature Kindergarten”
- Visit to a school or kindergarten to experience outdoor education
- Rationale behind outdoor education, post visit discussions
- Hands-on experience at the Museum of Archaeology
- International Evening
Conditions
The students will work in multicultural groups. The working language is English. This means that students must be able to follow lectures in English and capable to take part in the group discussions in English. The course will be free of charge. All students must however pay for their travelling costs. Students coming on a mutual exchange basis (students hosting each other) do not have to pay for accommodation and food. All students have to follow the course programme from Monday 8.30 to Friday 12.00. A certificate of attendance will be handed out at the end of the week.
