Recognition of Education

Do you have education from your home country? Are you planning to settle down in Norway? Would you like to have your degree from abroad recognized in Norway? Can you present your diploma or are you missing some documentation?

The process concerning recognition of education varies depending on the applicant's documentation. Please go thoroughly through the information published below about general recognition and recognition within the Project for Refugees with Insufficient Documentation.

Applicants who intend to work in Norway should check the following webpage: http://www.nokut.no/en/INVIA-en/ INVIA is a new national information centre that has been set up to provide information about the Norwegian authorisation and recognition systems. INVIA can inform you about professions that require authorisation in Norway and are regulated by Norwegian law.

Applicants with completed and documented Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) is an independent office located in Oslo. NOKUT works with individual applications concerning general academic recognition of foreign higher education. NOKUT is not responsible for professional authorisation (e.g. doctors, nurses, accountants, veterinaries, pilots etc please check http://www.nokut.no/en/Foreign-Education/Applicant/Systems-of-recognition/).
The general recognition of foreign higher education qualifications in Norway means that NOKUT considers whether the qualifications are equivalent to Norwegian higher education and makes an assessment of the extent to which it is equivalent, in terms of years of study and ECTS credits, Norwegian Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree.
The application form and more information can be found on www.nokut.no/en/Foreign-Education/Applicant/Application-form/

Teachers educated abroad

The Directorate for Education and Training is responsible for regulations concerning foreign professional qualifications required to hold a position as a teacher and as a supervisor or educational supervisor in a kindergarten in Norway. This applies to applicants in the following occupations:

* Applicants trained in another country as a teacher applying in Norway for a post as teacher in primary, lower secondary or upper secondary school
* Applicants trained in another country as a pre-school teacher applying in Norway for a post as supervisor or educational supervisor in a kindergarten

If you are professionally educated in another country than Norway in one of these professions and want to apply for a permanent job in Norway, you are required to present a formal recognition from the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training.

Refugees with missing/insufficient documentation

Refugees who cannot document their higher education or has been informed by NOKUT that their formal documentation does not fulfil the requirements to issue a general recognition, can follow a special recognition procedure established for refugees. In order to be eligible to participation in the project an applicant should:

  • be a refugee or have a residence permit in Norway on humanitarian grounds, or have been granted reunification with a family member who has any of these types of permit.
  • have a formal education from a university or university college in a country other than Norway.
  • have no documentation of his/her foreign higher education, or have been informed by NOKUT that the educational documents cannot be verified or that they are insufficient for granting general recognition.
  • be willing to fill out a comprehensive application form in order to map your educational background, and to take part in one or more detailed interviews in a university or write a thesis within your study area.
