Master of Science in Biological Chemistry
The University of Stavanger offers a MSc degree in Biological Chemistry. This is a two-year programme, which builds upon a BSc degree in Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or equivalent.
The study programme comprises 120 credit points (ECTS) in total, taken over 2 years. During the first year the students attend classes in biophysical chemistry, bioinformatics, and practical courses in molecular biology. Optional subjects are chosen from courses in environmental science, food science, chemistry, or computational biology. The teaching often takes place in smaller groups where a professional dialogue is emphasized.
A substantial feature of this Master Programme is a nine month research project (master thesis), where the students join one of several research groups working in the forefront of cell biology, plant science, biomedical science, bioinformatics or computational biology.
The master thesis, which is under guidance, is handed in at the end of 4th semester.

By the end of the programme the students will have acquired practical and theoretical skills in molecular biology, biophysical chemistry and practical bioinformatics. They will have experience in many analytical techniques, and will have acquired knowledge of research methods, team-work, and presentation of scientific results.
Employment opportunities and postgraduate education
A MSc degree in Biological Chemistry will enable candidates to work in many research and industrial arenas, as well as governmental offices. The graduates will also have developed valuable transferable skills in communication, problem-solving, and scientific investigations, which will be applicable in a wide range of careers. After completing the MSc degree there is the possibility to do a PhD in Biological Chemistry by completing a further 3-year study.
Study Plan and details concerning MSc in Biological Chemistry can be found below. Information about admission procedure and application form is published in the right column under "All you need to know".
Please note that the course combination below is valid for current academic year. Course combination for 2011-2012 will be published in June 2011.
Entry:
In order to be admitted to the master course in Biological Chemistry the student must have completed a bachelor degree in biological chemistry/molecular biology/cell biology, biochemistry or another bachelor degree with 90 credit points in chemistry and molecular biology/cell biology.
Normally, the level of grades of those that are short listed is equivalent to a Second Class Upper Division or better. Applicants with a grade level equivalent to Second Class Lower Division, or lower, will usually not be considered for admission.
