Music and Dance

The Department of Music and Dance (IMD) has its roots in traditional classical conservatory education. In recent years, IMD has developed exciting new programmes in jazz/ improvisation and dance.

With this multi-disciplinary approach, IMD has established a uniquely innovative environment within Norwegian higher education. Approximately 220 students are active in bachelors, masters, and post-graduate programmes within the department.

Starting in the Autumn 2009, the department is offering three performance focused bachelor programmes in dance, classical music, and jazz/ improvisation. Music students can choose between a three year bachelors in performance or an expanded four year programme with practical pedagogic education integrated into the third and fourth years. The four year bachelor programme in dance includes practical pedagogic education as a general requirement. All our graduate studies are open for international applicants. It is only our undergraduate studies, as for example the Bachelor programmes, that are thought in Norwegian only, and the programmes requires of course knowledge of Norwegian language.

At the graduate level, we can offer a two year masters programme in music performance. As a new addition, improvisation is offered as a specialist area – without specifying any idiomatic direction, students may come from a variety of backgrounds (jazz, contemporary music, electronica etc).

A one year postgraduate programme in music performance - classical (PDM) for soloists is offered as well.

IMD also offers a broad spectrum of continuing higher education in Extension Studies in Music Performance, with subjects like instrumental and vocal performance, chamber music, composition and arrangement and so on. IMD also offers a one year specialization in music production and recording.
