Master in Music Performance

The Master programme at the Department of music and dance, University of Stavanger, is strongly emphasizing the performing aspect in the student. All subjects are ment to build the music student as a performer and a reflected artist in his own field. The programme is fit for both classical and jazz/ impro- oriented students.

The current programme was implemented autumn 2011, and will naturally be modified and revised during it’s first year in practice. The following description will be a cursory one, and a complete Study plan will be presented to the student in August 2012, at the start of the study year 2012/2013.

ORGANISATION

A main teacher will be appointed for each student, who will be in charge of the weekly/ scheduled teaching (students are free to take lessons from other teachers sporadically, but should clear this with their main teacher first).

Individual teaching
Weekly classes/ in-depth teaching, main instrument.

Accompaniment (for orchestra instruments and singers)
Weekly (individual instruction of main instrument and accompaniment may be combined as necessary).

Seminar/ interpretation in the instrument group
Weekly (except for master class weeks).

Ensemble playing
Will be organised in collaboration with main instrument teacher.

Master class
Compulsory communal class for all students at least once a month. The various main teachers organise the master class instructions between them, either by each one taking responsibility for each seminar, or by having more people take part in the same.

Concert praxis
Planning will take place in collaboration with the University's concert coordinator or concert leader, where the individual student sets the time for the concerts as agreed with their main teacher and concert producer. The student will be required to collect the necessary information for press releases and concert programs. Students can also arrange their own concerts, and house concerts can make suitable forums for gaining experience.

Concert attendance
Students should attend as many as possible of the concerts by professional musicians in the region, including festivals and other intensive arrangements.

Repertoire knowledge
Organised teaching in repertoire knowledge, studies of scores, and work on various recordings and supplementary literature as agreed. Students may also be asked to play certain more recent pieces as part of their repertoire.
