Introduction:
The written assignment is submitted the end of the semester. The students will receive further information about the assignment on a meeting which is held at the beginning of the autumn term (in the fifth semester). At this meeting the students will learn who their supervisor will be, the rules and regulations attached to the assignment, registration form etc.

Deadline:
The written assignment is to be handed in on 1 November or 1 June.

Criteria:
3 copies of the assignment is handed in at the Student Desk at the School of Hotel Management – Department of Business Administration. The assignment should have one cover sheet with a title, name of the candidate(s), the full title of the bachelor programme and the name of the faculty. In cases where students have worked for a company and this work is included in the assignment the students might submit several copies. In such cases, the assignment might not be made accessible for the public for a period of time.

Objectives:
The assignment aims to provide the students the opportunity to gain an in depth understanding of a relevant subject area within their field of study. The assignment is a piece of independent work where the students will use the knowledge which they have acquired throughout the course.

While working on the assignment the students will acquire the skills of critical thinking and documentation. Furthermore the students will gain insight into research methods and how to use Harvard referencing style.

Content:
The students are expected to apply theories and research methods from their field of study in the assignment. The assignment can challenge or explore theories or current empirical based knowledge within the field of study
The students can either submit an individual piece of work (20-40 pages) or as a group with maximum 3 members. The institute encourages the students to work in groups on this assignment in which case the supervisor will decide upon the proper number of pages. A one page abstract is submitted along with the assignment in both cases.

Supervision
Every student/group of students will receive supervision at 3 times (minimum) during the semester and when the assignments are marked the attendance at these meetings is taken into account. Our students are strongly recommended to meet with the supervisor as early as possible in the beginning of the semester.

Method of work:
The students meet with their supervisor at least 3 times throughout the semester and attendance is highly recommended. Make sure that you bring with you written notes and suggestions for every meeting. Listen to the feedback that the supervisor gives, and remember: Writing a thesis is a process which takes time! The assignment is an individual piece of work and it should be clear in the assignment which approach that has been chosen (refer to “objectives”)


Literature:
The literature used for the assignment is to be included in the list of references. All references needs to include three main elements: 1. Name of the author(s), 2. Title of book/journal article/etc. 3. Publisher information
