Requirements

Educational Background: Foreign qualifications are normally recognized as higher education qualifications in Norway when they are at the same level as Norwegian higher education qualifications.

1) Academic Level:
The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, NOKUT has prepared a list of the minimum admission requirements for Norwegian higher education institutions for applicants with foreign qualifications. A link to this list is given here: Entrance requirements for applicants with foreign education.

Qualifications at a higher level than this entrance level will normally be recognized as higher education qualifications in Norway if you apply to NOKUT for general recognitionof your education and follow the procedure described on the webpage.

In some cases, the first - and sometimes the second - year of study at a foreign higher education institution will not be recognized as higher education in Norway but as necessary secondary level.

2) English Language Requirements for International Students:

Entrance requirements to programmes in English and in Norwegian are described in details here. Please check carefully your country and the programme you apply for.

3) Norwegian Language Requirements:
Exemption: applicants for the Norwegian Language and Culture programme, and for the programmes offered with English as the language of instruction.

  • University exam in Norwegian, level III (arranged at Norwegian universities)
  • The so-called “Bergen test” with 450 points or better
  • Exam from Norwegian Upper Secondary School, with Norwegian as a second language “Norsk alternativ fagplan” (VK2).
  • Exam in a one-year course in “Norwegian Language and Society for Foreign Students” from a University College

International students who have completed the three years secondary school in Norway, or have had Norwegian as their second language in secondary school, are not required to sit for a test in Norwegian language.
