Norwegian Language and Culture

An intensive 1-year-long course in Norwegian Language and Culture that gives students the language qualifications to enter any university-level programme in Norway.

This full-time course is designed for students who are either planning to study in Norway or for students who are already in Norway and who need to improve their language skills for study or research purposes. It will also suit the needs of students who wish to pursue Scandinavian Studies programmes and who need to focus on Norwegian language.

Those students who intend to pursue further studies at the University of Stavanger where language of instruction is Norwegian will be given priority. Please note that we will not prioritise students who already have many years of academic education and hold a Master's degree. Students are expected to fulfil the general admission requirements in order to be able to attend universities/colleges in Norway. Specific information regarding these requirements and the applicant’s checklist can be found in the column on the right hand side of this page.

Detailed information regarding the course outline can be found under the link below:

Norwegian language, culture and society for foreign students - One year programme

The course is meant for students who do not have any knowledge of Norwegian and will therefore start at a beginner’s level. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to either study or work in Norway in a Norwegian language environment. During the 1st level of the course the language of instruction will partly be English, this will slowly change during the 2nd level. The 3rd level of the programme will be taught entirely in Norwegian.

Important
Admission to the Norwegian Language and Culture programme does not, in itself, make a student eligible for a Norwegian visa. In order to obtain a visa, students must present evidence that they intend to pursue further studies in Norway. Their application must also include a conditional offer of a place in a study programme the following year. Special exceptions can be made to this rule if, for example, the courses taken in Norway supplement a Norwegian Language programme or Cultural Studies programme in the person’s home country. This exception also applies to authorised health-professionals who need Norwegian to work in Norway. For further information, please contact your local embassy or consulate.

Please note that there are no scholarships available for the Norwegian Language and Culture Programme!
