Plans for the PhD study

This part of the application should be written in collaboration with a supervisor from the relevant academic environment at UiS. Applicants who are not already in contact with a potential supervisor must fill in all the available information and complete the remaining items after a supervisor has been appointed. The application will not be considered in full until a supervisor is in place and has signed the completed application.

Description of research project
Applicants must write a short, popularized description of the research project to be used for information purposes by the university. In addition they must provide a complete project description that forms the basis for evaluation for admission. This description should normally be written in collaboration with the main supervisor and must contain a description of the theme, problem and choice of theory and method. If the candidate chooses to submit a preliminary outline for the project description, a complete project description must be submitted within six months after admission.

Instruction component
The PhD studies at the University of Stavanger include an instruction component amounting to 30-45 credits. The instruction component consists of modules of philosophy of science, ethics and research methods, as well as thematic courses that support the subject of the thesis. Some of the courses are compulsory, others are elective. This varies from programme to programme (cf. description of instruction component for the relevant programme). The instruction component should be discussed with the supervisor before it is determined. 

Plan for publication
Applicants are free to suggest a plan for publication/dissemination of results, but the final plan should be set up in collaboration with the supervisor.

Stays abroad
PhD candidates at the University of Stavanger are normally expected to spend at least three months of their PhD studies at an acknowledged education establishment or research institution outside Norway, where they have an opportunity to work on the themes and problems in their thesis. The right to include stays abroad is determined in the PhD regulations at UiS, and the university has a separate funding programme for mobility.
Applicants are free to suggest desired periods and locations abroad. Such stays must, however, be approved by the supervisor.

Supervisor
Applicants may suggest main supervisors or co-supervisors or give an account of agreements with potential supervisors.

Workspace
Please state where the applicant plans to carry out his/her daily work during the study period.

Funding plan
The applicant must account for the funding for the entire period. Funding sources are those that grant scholarships, disburse salaries or provide funding for research time. Documentation of funding must be enclosed.

Large research projects
If the PhD work is part of a larger research project, please state the name of this project
