The bachelor’s degree in history (180 ECTS) is based on a study of the past, an understanding of the present and perspectives for the future.
You as a student will develop critical awareness and distance to history and the present. This will give you an understanding of the distinctive features of history as a discipline. You will be trained in critical analysis, and in assessing and presenting historical sources and descriptions.The programme will introduce students to Norwegian and European history from about 500 BC until modern times.
The programme is a three-year lower degree, with history as the specialisation subject yielding 80 ECTS. In addition, students must choose a general subject equivalent to 60 ECTS.
Preliminary exams (Examen philosophicum, 10 ECTS, and Examen facultatum, 10 ECTS) are compulsory. The student can choose between three general subjects for the bachelor’s degree in history: English, Religious studies and Nordic language. The programme also includes 20 optional ECTS credits, where stdents may choose freely from various courses offered by the university.
In the final semester of the bachelor's degree students will write a final paper for which they will have to choose a relevant topic. This is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into a subject which has particularly caught your fancy.
History – one-year programme
The one-year history programme (60 ECTS) provides a basic understanding of the main features in Norwegian and European history from antiquity to the present day. It covers the course of and changes in Norwegian history as well as the relationship between Norway’s historical development and external impulses. The one-year programme may be expanded with a 30-credit specialisation programme equivalent to the specialisation component of the bachelor's programme. The latter is currently offered as a part-time course only.
