There are several paths to becoming a teacher in Norway. The Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Stavanger currently offers a four-year general teacher education programme, a pre-school teaching degree (bachelor's degree/ 3 years) and a postgraduate certificate in education (1 year full-time or 2 years part-time). Which one you should choose, depends primarily on what age group you want to work with.

The Faculty currently offers three different master's degree programmes for teachers: Special Needs Education, Early Childhood Education Science and Primary School Mathemathics.

It is possible to apply directly for admission to various in-depth areas of study, such as sports / physical education, arts and crafts, social studies and drama. These programmes can either be taken as independent study programmes, or they can be incorporated into a degree in teaching.

The Faculty's departments and research centres carry out research in learning-related issues, subject didactics and teacher training.

The Faculty also offers specialised programmes for thos who want to combine a degree in music or dance with a teacher qualification. Follow the link to Music and Dance for more information.
