With one year of relevant further education, the pre-school teacher can also be appointed to jobs from the first to the fourth grade of compulsory school. The course helps the student to participate actively in the development of- and debate on good nursery schools for all children. Subjects in the pre-school teaching programme are intended to provide professional knowledge and insight within an overall understanding of the learning process in which care, play and learning form natural elements.
The three-year course (180 ECTS) qualifies for a bachelor’s degree. In addition to covering all subjects from the pre-school perspective, it includes a unit (5 ECTS) on special education – in which the university has particular expertise – during the fifth semester.
Teaching practice is compulsory and lasts about 20 weeks in all, including 18 weeks in a nursery school and two in the first year of compulsory school.
From atumn 2009 the University of Stavanger will also offer this programme as a four-year, part-time degree.
