The course provides a professional education, is closely tied to practical experience, and is designed in accordance with Norwegian education legislation and the existing framework plan for general teacher training adopted by the Ministry of Education and Research on 3 April 2003 and Norway’s higher education legislation.
The general teacher training programme is a four-year professional course (240 ECTS), embracing compulsory (120 ECTS) and optional (120 ECTS) sections. In addition, 20-22 weeks of supervised teaching practice are integrated in the course.
This practice will primarily take place in primary or secondary schools, but up to two weeks can also involve other relevant areas of practice. The compulsory part comprises pedagogy (30 ECTS), Christianity/religion (20 ECTS), mathematics (30 ECTS), Norwegian (30 ECTS) and basic reading, writing and mathematics teaching (10 ECTS). In the optional part of the programme, students can choose between various school subjects such as Social Science, Mathemathics, Natural Science, Physical Education, Food and Health, Arts and Crafts, Drama, Comparative Educational Studies and languages (English and Norwegian). The subjects offered in the optional part of the programme can vary from year to year.
Students must have a good grasp of the Norwegian language in order to be able to complete this programme.
