Sjøvaag's main research interest is journalism as an institution, and how journalism is expressed under different framework conditions. She has published widely in international journals, particularly on journalism as a profession, media structures and economy, media regulation and computational methods for communication research.

Sjøvaag currently leads a research project on the digital news agenda in Scandinavia.

Research in progress

The digital news agenda in Scandinavia

The project investigates what constitutes the structural conditions shaping the digital news agendas in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Economy, technology, geography and regulation are among the factors considered as relevant for the way journalism spreads in the digital spheres, and how news reaches audiences. The project analyses how the hyperlink structure of online news conditions the ability of actors to set the news agenda online. 

The project is a collaboration between the University of Stavanger, Karlstad University, IT University of Copenhagen, VU Amsterdam and the University of Bergen.
