Sustainability and energy in relation to Architecture, Mobility and Urban planning. Has participated in five five-year  EU Framework Programmes and IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (SHCP) research projects in the Fields of mobility, solar energy autonomous architecture, urban and regional planning. Among them IEA SHCP Task 40 "Net Zero Energy Buildings" 2009-2013, IEA SHCP Task 28 "Sustainable Solar Housing" 2000-2005,  EU DG TREN Eco building Programme "Brita in pubs" 2004 - 2008 and EU DG TREN Energy & Transport Thermie Programme "Elcidis" 1997 - 2003.

Has been visiting professor and lectured at a range of universities on several continents, among others: Harvard, UCL and Architectural Association London, ETSAB and La Salle Barcelona, Mackintosh Glasgow, Heriot-Watt Edinburg og Moratuwa University Colombo, 

Hars received a range of awards for his pioneering work, among others:  UN Year of Shelter for the Homeless CINTUS (1987), Gro Harlem Brundtland`s Environmental Foundation  (1992), World Habitat Award (2005) for contribution to a social housing Public participation solar project in Gøteborg (run by Christer Nordstrøm, Sweden), nominated for the John Bonda Award and the Aga Khan Award (2007) for architecture for a solar energy autonomous TV-media center for WGM  in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The latter Project was awarded the ICTAD prize (2014). Best Professor  at Masterlevel Award 2016/2017, University of Stavanger, Faculty of Science and Technology.

Author of eight books. The first was 'The Sunshine Revolution' (1992) predicting the sunshine revolution now happening. The latest  'Corruption the Nobel way' (2015) documented why Norway was not a driving force in this revolution. Co-Author of another ten books, the latest "Public Corruption" edited by Gottschalk and Stanislas and launched by CRC in the US (2017).

Architect/Urban planner at Greater London Council, Dept of Architecture and Town Planning, Westminster, London - planning sustainable social housing schemes. Worked for Save the Children and Strømme Foundation in Asia and West Africa. Architect at Architect MNAL Thoralf Bryne AS, Stavanger, engaged in competions and designing Askim town hall, theatre and concert hall. Set up own practice SunLab in 1978/later named Sivilarkitekt MNAL Harald N. Røstvik AS, owner until 2018. The company was one of the world's first solely solar design companies and has carried out a range of sustainability projects and international competitions on many continents on its own or with renowned practices as partners. Among them Meletitiki in Athens, Greece and Kahawita de Silva in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Teaching and speaking at international Conferences has been a crucial part of his life and has taken him to renowned universities and Conferences. Part time (50%) professor at Bergen School of Architecture since 2009Full time professor at University of Stavanger since 2017.
