Workshop: Democratic participation in society - How to live together?

This is the inaugural workshop in the two-year project, Transforming Identities: Exploring changes, tensions and visions in the Nordic region through the prism of identity politics.

In this project we explore the impulses for new understandings of equality and rights, of solidarity and democracy, in the context of shifting political landscapes, growing nationalism, local and global insecurities to do with inequalities and violence, environmental challenges, and more. We are particularly interested in discussing if, why and how minorities, broadly defined, are seen as problematic and threatening to democratic principles and ideals. Are we seeing a new dynamics of an us/them dichotomy? What is exceptional, if anything, about this process in the Nordic region? The workshop will organize a public debate in Stavanger on Wednesday 7 November. More information to come.
