Immersive Theatre

The dancers of the UiS Faculty of Performing Arts present the result of their first adventure in immersive performance-making at Tou Scene.

Conceived and directed by Julia Kelly and Edward Rice (Third Rail Projects, USA), in collaboration with all 36 performers, this experience invites you into a world of their own devising, born inside this historic venue and inspired by its story. Explore the cavernous spaces and quieter corridors of Tou Scene as this world unfolds around you, at the intersection of site-specific dance and theater and the border between performance and experience.

The Methodology of the project

Julia Kelly and Edward Rice  from Third Rail Projects, USA are the directors of this project. Their approach in devising dance-theater recognizes the power of the individual voice as a generator of material, and folds that into a collaborative process for an ensemble. From facilitated movement explorations, games and structured improvisation, performers will generate material-- then gift and receive material-- as the whole takes its shape.  They will subsequently form this into scenes or episodes and, finally, fully translate them to respond to our space(s) at Tou Scene. They will skill-build for immersive performance, meanwhile: what does it mean to be present with, see, and listen to, and include our audience in close proximity?

Julia Kelly

Julia Kelly is Brooklyn-based performing artist with interest in the intersections of dance, theater, music and storytelling.  Across a 15-year performing career that has spanned musical theater, opera, classical modern and contemporary dance forms-- in traditional  and non-traditional spaces-- she remains most curious about the language of human movement and behavior, and its power to communicate.
