This is the study programme for 2020/2021.


After completing the course, the student will have a basic understanding of building materials used in civil engineering construction. Furthermore, the student should have a basic understanding of geotechnical problems and be able to perform basic geotechnical analysis and design.

Learning outcome

After completing this course the student will have a basic understanding of geotechnical problems, and enabling to carry out basic geotechnical calculations.

Contents

Building materials: Properties and testing, handling and use of materials in building projects. Concrete: production, properties, proportioning. Timber and timber-based materials: properties, drying, sorting, laminated timber. Brickwork and masonry: production, properties. Basic knowledge of other materials used in the civil engineering construction.
Geotechnical Engineering: Introduction to geology, the origin of the soil and sediments, physical properties of the soil, pores and stresses in the soil. Soil mechanics, shear strength, slope stability and soil pressure at rest, active and passive states. Foundations on clay and sand, pile foundations, soil compaction, settlement, consolidation, seepage.

The examination consist of two parts which is building material and geotechnique. The candidate has to pass both parts. Each exams part weights 50%

Coursework requirements

Compulsory assignments which have to be passed to be allowed to sit the exam
All compulsory lab assignments (in total 10) must be approved in order to take the exam. Lab assignments have compulsory attendance and written reports must be approved.
