The focus of the course is on the historical perspective of migration and the subjective experiences and interpretations of migrants. Autobiographies and bigraphical research (e.g. narrative methods) enrich the understanding of migration as a social, political and cultural, phenomenon. Special attention will be given to women's experiences and gender dimensions.

Learning outcome

Students will have acquired:
- Knowledge of and sensitivity for power relations as reflected in culturalism, racism or nationalism,
- knowledge of crucial and urgent problems of the contemporary world - growing cultural complexity and new expectations of social justice in relation to this phenomenon,
- an understanding of identity formation,
- knowledge on gender concepts, strategies and policies in a variety of cultural/national contexts
