This is the study programme for 2020/2021.


This course provides an overview of Operation Management topics which is the foundation for both SupplyChain and Lean Management issues. The focus is on industrial relevant topics like SupplyChain, Lean Management, Theory of Constraints, and Industry 4.0. These issues overlap partly and will be treated in lectures, essays, presentations etc. How can management of operations contribute to a profitable company or organization. Even if most of the references are from manufacturing industry, the course content and methods are relevant for service and other organizations.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Students will have:
  • A fundamental understanding that includes the delivery of products and services
  • Knowledge of selected topics and methods regarding the operation and development of a company.
  • Focus is on how to develop and run a profitable company that delivers products and services with limitations on schedule, quality and price. This is undertaken with an emphasis on supply chain and lean management.
  • Understand the complexity and relations required in running a company.

Students will:
  • Be able to explain core topics and develop an advanced understanding of core models, methods and theories that Operation Management with SupplyChain and Lean Management builds upon.
  • Be able to use different theories and models to analyse what is happening in a company in different situations, and be able to design their own analysis to recommend actions for a company.
  • Be able to use theoretical models and concepts as a basis for development of a company's production and service deliveries.

Contents

The course provides an overview of basic issues in Operation Management. This may be a partial repetition for some students, but it will establish a common foundation for the main topics of SupplyChain and Lean Management.
The main topics which form the basis of lectures, assignments and other content will include:
  • Supply chain/ value chain
  • Lean management
  • Modelling tools for workflows
  • Theory of constraints
  • Industry 4.0

These main topics may change from semester to semester. The topics will be covered in lectures in collaboration with student groups in which assignment essays will be presented.
Each group writes three essays in total, following a normal international journal template. All essays are presented to fellow students and feedback will be given at presentation and from the course tutor. The essays will count towards the final grade, and these can be updated before the final deadline.
While many of the cases and issues covered will come from industry, the methods and focus of this course are just as applicable for the service, retail, healthcare and tourism sectors.

None.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course does not require any bachelor course in operations management, production management, logistics, supply management or similar. It is aimed at Master's students and, as such, assumes a bachelor degree including mathematics, statistics, budgeting and accounting, and organizational theory from The UiS Business School, The Norwegian School of Hotel Management, UiS engineering bachelors or similar. Students with work experience or courses in operations management will have an advantage regarding some topics early in the course and some of the case descriptions, but this does not reduce the ECTS of the course.

The grade will be given in two equal parts:
  • A collection of the three essays previously delivered and presented shall be handed in by the given final deadline. It will be possible to update the essay collection due to feedback between the time at which the essays are first handed in and the final deadline.
  • An individual oral exam. A list of questions for the oral exam will be made available approximate one month before the exam. At the exam students will draw from this list.

Information permitted:
You are permitted to use any source of information for the essays, but these must be cited in the references.
No assistance or additional material is allowed in the individual oral exam.

It is mandatory for the groups to hand in and present three essays according to schedule during the term.

Method of work

The course will utilise problem-based learning with project groups in adapted form. This means that the students will be working in groups of 3-5 students throughout the whole semester.
The course is divided into parts, which partially overlap.
  • Part 1 is the lectures which provide an overview.
  • Part 2 consists of group work in assignment presentations where the groups will prepare, document and present for the other groups. The assignments consist of essays, with topics to be given by the lecturer. The tutor will, as needed, supply additional lecturing on the topic. The essays will be presented and handed in according to schedule. The essays in revised version are to be submitted for assessment for their final grade. These may be updated before the final deadline. Guidance will be provided during the writing process.
  • Part 3 is the preparation for and doing the individual oral exam.

At the beginning of the semester, a plan for the semester will be provided, but small changes to this will be made. All deliveries are via the online system Canvas.
The oral exam, which counts for 50% of the final grade, is individual. The subjects that students may be questioned on in the exam will be made available about a month before the oral exam date.
Estimated workload
- Participation in lectures: 50 hours (3 hours per week)
- Reading and group presentations: 90 hours
- Group: essay writing: 75 hours
- Exam preparation: 55 hours
TOTAL: 270 hours
It is planned that the course will contain a 3-hour lecture and 2 hours available for guidance weekly, but changes may occur.

Course assessment

Students will have the opportunity to give feedback on the course first in an early dialogue, and then in a written course evaluation at the end of the course.
