Innovation in service organizations is a necessary process in the interacting between exploring and exploiting in a changing business environment. Innovation is the means entrepreneurs exploit change as an opportunity for a different business or a different service, and the innovation processes are managed with administrative tools to ensure goal achievement. Both the integration of innovation into existing business models and these management processes are investigated in theory and practice.
Leaders make strategies based on their ideas of business development, internal and external analyses. However, realizations of strategic changes or growth (innovations) have to be tested and evaluated before implementation. This course will focus on how such testing of innovative business models should be done.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:
Knowledge:
After completing this course the student has
  • Advanced knowledge into business process analysis especially related to the organization of value creation.
  • In-depth knowledge into the organizational processes related to exploring and exploiting market options, and the following consequences related to leadership and management.
  • In-depth knowledge of organizational structures for innovation processes, including risk management procedures.
  • training in identifying local and international sources of innovation and entrepreneur projects, internal as well as external, and identifying the applicability of management techniques to service innovation.
  • thorough knowledge of different types of international service innovation projects, from "arrowhead" processes to innovative programs.

Skills:
After completing this course the student can:
  • analyze existing theories and methods in order to plan, manage, and control integrated innovation processes in local or international service organizations, both in stable and changing service business environments and high process variety, as well as processes with low and high volumes.
  • analyze systematic applications of value creation mechanisms in existing service business models.
  • apply "Earned Value" models in innovation projects.
  • apply and establish feedback systems linked to planning models.
  • analyze and critically apply the function and application of iterative processes, both as a managerial tool as well as for organizational learning in innovation and entrepreneurial projects.

General competences:
After completing this course the student can:
  • analyze and formulate problem statements concerning managerial processes and information flow.
  • contribute in teamwork that may lead to new thinking and innovation processes.
  • communicate innovation research and innovation process content and outcomes to different audiences like other researchers, managers and the general public.
  • apply his/her knowledge and skills in new areas in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects.

Method of work

3 hour weekly teaching class throughout the semester. Active student learning by using cases, dialogues and presentations.

Open to

Open to the master students in Master of Service Leadership in International Business program, and other master students from UiS when vacancy.

Course assessment

The course will be assessed and evaluated according to the University of Stavanger' administrative quality system.
