Advanced wastewater treatment is aimed at post-graduate and early phase PhD level with solid background in bioprocess analysis and modelling applied at wastewater treatment systems. Students will achieve advanced level biological wastewater treatment knowledge, including full mass balance analysis of biological nitrogen and phosphorous removal as defined by the steady state and dynamic activated sludge models (ASM). In addition, students will gain advanced knowledge on the analysis and design of secondary settlers. Combined this will result in a complete process analytical approach for advanced biological wastewater treatment process design and operation.

Learning outcome

Successful students will understand and be able to use the activated sludge model framework (both steady state and dynamic) for design and operation of advanced biological wastewater treatment systems including biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In this course COD mass balanced part of the ASMs (steady state and dynamic) are extended to include biological nitrogen and phosphorous removal under steady state conditions, which is the special case of constant flow and load conditions. The insight and understanding of the steady state condition is then extended to dynamic loading conditions as represented in ASM1, ASM2 and ASM3. In addition, students will be able to use the advanced modeling approaches for design and operation of secondary settlers, and integrate them with the full conversion processes in the ASM models.


Review of the COD balance in ASMs, including biological growth and endogenous decay. Nitrification and denitrification conversion processes, including biomass assimilation and catabolic conversions. Mechanisms and process analysis of enhanced biological phosphorous removal. Activated sludge process configurations for biological nutrient removal (BNR). Final settling: Mechanisms and analysis by flux theory and model based approaches. Design and operations of secondary clarifiers.

Method of work

8x45minute lectures per day for 6 days in June. Lectures run from quarter to the hour to half past the hour. There will be a 15 min break between each 45 min lecture and a 75 min lunch break.
