The course is aimed at the students who want to work with marine operations related to oil and gas platforms or offshore wind mills.

Learning outcome

Give the students an introduction to the theme marine operations by:
  • Giving the students an introduction to vessels and response of vessels that are being used for marine operations
  • Giving the students an understanding of problems related to different types of marine operations
  • Giving the students an understanding of the limitations wind and waves pose on marine operations
  • Giving the students an understanding of the risks associated with marine operation

Contents

This course can be considered an extension of the course OFF580, Marine Technology and design: dynamics of structures exposed to wave loads and modeling of waves as stochastic processes will here be considered. An introduction to vessel types and vessel response as well as mooring and dynamic positioning of vessels will be given. Different types of marine operations will be discussed. Themes as weather windows and marine operations, towing, crane operations and underwater installation works are part of the course. Furthermore, risk assessments associated with marine operations will be part of the course.

Coursework requirements

Mandatory assesments
80% of exercises (4 out of 5) must be approved prior to the student is allowed to enter the exam. Up to half of the assignments may be given as group tasks. Visits to companies will not be compulsory but is strongly encouraged.
Compulsory lab exercises with demonstration of computer programme.

Method of work

In average three hours of lectures and one hour exercises every week, more during certain periods. Home exercises: 80% of exercises must be approved prior to the student is allowed to enter the exam. The exercises shall be handed in according to plans for the course. Active participation at lectures in class is recommended. All information about the course (including information about time for lectures) will be posted on Canvas. The course is given in English. Guest lecturers from industry might be will be invited on wave statistics and on risk in marine operations. Mandatory work demands (such as hand in assignments, lab-assignments, projects, etc.) must be approved by subject teacher within the given deadline.
