This course covers fundamental issues related to risk analysis and governance as a field and science, with emphasis on basic concepts and principles. Risk analysis here includes risk assessment, risk characterization, risk perception,risk communication, risk management, and policy relating to risk.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student will have basic knowledge about the field and science of risk analysis and governance, and be able to support risk (safety, security) knowledge and tackling of risk (safety, security) problems.

Contents

This course covers fundamental issues related to risk analysis and governance as a field and science, with emphasis on basic concepts and principles. Risk analysis here includes risk assessment, risk characterization, risk perception,risk communication, risk management, and policy relating to risk. More specific topics: What is risk analysis and risk governance? Different approaches used and issues raised. The risk analysis field and science. Different types of research methods used in risk analysis and governance. The distinction between applied risk analysis and generic risk analysis. The risk concept. Risk metrics. Risk, uncertainties and knowledge. Surprises and the unforeseen (black swans). The probability (likelihood) concept. Risk problem categorizations. Related concepts like hazards, threats, opportunities, danger, vulnerabilities, resilience, safety, security, risk source, etc.; commonalities and distinctions.

2 hours teaching per week. The course is based on the use of videos reflecting basic curriculum and discussion of key issues related to this curriculum
