Songstudents perform Hugo Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch in the Eikenes Hall at the Faculty of Performing Arts, University of Stavanger.

Italienisches Liederbuch (The Italian Songbook) is a collection of 46 miniature songs for voice and piano composed by the Austrian composer Hugo Wolf. The texts, by Paul Heyse, are German translations of Italian poems.

Rather than forming a song cycle with a continuous narrative, the work is a collection of poems centered on the theme of love, viewed from both female and male perspectives. The male voice tends to idealize the woman and her beauty, while the female voice takes a more practical approach to love and occasionally expresses frustration with the man.

The concert concludes an intensive week of masterclasses led by the Dutch pianist Jan Willem Nelleke, who, through his long-standing collaboration with professor Bettina Smith, has developed a particular specialization in the art song repertoire.

Performers:
Mari Kvamsdal, Inna Marja Amundsen, Elisabeth Drønen-Midtgaard, Jacqueline Lanzrein, Kristian Rønningen – voice
Hans-Petter Tangen – piano
