Trial lecture and PhD defence in the Hetland Hall

PhD fellow in classical music Héloïse Baldelli will defend her doctoral project on Friday 12 June in the Hetland Hall at the Faculty of Performing Arts, University of Stavanger.
The trial lecture begins at 10:00. The topic of the lecture is Between Cabaret Aesthetics and Performance: The Use of Voice and Body in the Performing Arts, 1900–2020. The public defence starts at 12:15, and the title of the artistic doctoral work is From Werktreue to Embodied Truth: Reclaiming the Performer’s Voice in French Art Song. The defence will be chaired by Dean Harald Eikaas and conducted in English.
This doctoral project explores alternative formats for the performance of French modernist art songs, with particular emphasis on the repertoire of Erik Satie and the musical circle he established, Les Nouveaux Jeunes, specifically Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud and Georges Auric. By breaking with the rigid conventions of the classical vocal recital, the project investigates how redefining the performer’s role as a creative collaborator can inspire innovative forms of performance that challenge stereotypes within classical vocal music.
Baldelli completed a Master’s degree in Performance at the Faculty of Performing Arts, University of Stavanger in autumn 2020, with classical singing as her principal study. Her master’s thesis was entitled The Comic Repertoire for the Classical Singer.
