– This is an important step to strengthen UiS as an attractive and international research university, says Vice-Rector for Education, Bjørg Oftedal.

UiS wants to attract more international applicants because:

  • University of Stavanger aims to be an open university. UiS has always been an international academic institution in a region with a vibrant international business sector, where 21.4 percent of the population comes from 160 different countries.
  • Students from all corners of the world contribute to a better study and learning environment. This is valuable for both students and research communities.
  • Experience shows that most of our international students find jobs in Rogaland or other parts of Norway, as they possess highly sought-after skills.

Two fee levels

The new pricing model includes two rates (per year / 60 ECTS credits):

  • NOK 60,000 for humanities, social sciences, and economics/administrative subjects
  • NOK 85,000 for natural sciences, technology, health, social work and sports, teacher education, and performing arts and media studies

The prices also apply to students admitted before 2026. UiS is publishing the new rates now, ahead of the legal change, to provide predictability for students.

Legal amendment

The new rates follow a proposed legal amendment that allows universities to set lower fees. Previously, universities were required to charge fees equivalent to full cost coverage, including all direct and indirect costs associated with the study programme over time.

However, it has become clear that very few students from the affected countries have paid these amounts. In 2025, only 13 out of 79 students from countries outside the EEA paid tuition fees at UiS. The others had scholarships or met the criteria for exemption.
