Content
The course gives an introduction about the city region as a relevant scale for regional and urban development. The city region as a system og areas, functions, centres and interactions is the main topic of the course. The course is project-based and aims at giving a deeper understanding of the city as a part of a larger housing, labour and service region. Integrated land use and transport planning is a central topic in the course, as is the analysis, planning and deisgn of urban regions and areas, transport hubs, urban centers, transport infrastructure. ArcMap (GIS) is used as analysis and planning tool.
Learning outcome
After the course the students should have
- knowledge about the city region as a concept that integreates the city with the larger context of regional interactions
- an understanding of the city as a dynamic area where external and internal forces influence and change dwelling, working and traveling patterns
- an understanding of the role that land use and transport planning has in terms of achieving urban sustainable development, reduce environmental issues and increase quality of life and societal safety
- knowledge about the defintion of dwelling, working, communitng or identity regions
After the course the students should be able to
- develop scenarios and proposals for different futures of the city and the region
- develop masterplans based in spatial analysis, statistical data and prognoses
- develop design programs for central areas in the regional and urban system
- collect relevant information and coduct geographic analyses using GIS tools
- Make reccomendations for urban and regional development based on SWOT-analyses
Students should have general knowledge about
- oral, written and graphic presentations about topics that relate to the city region, regional planning or long term land use and transport plans
- discussions and arguments relating to urban sustainablity and relating measures and their relevance and effectiveness
- independent investigations into the future of urban and regional development

4 hours of formal teaching (lectures, exercises, tutorials, seminars, presentations/reviews, studio work) in addition to the project work (individual and in groups). Participation in the group/project work is mandatory. Contributions to the group work must be documented.

Course assessment
There must be an early dialogue between the course coordinator, the student representative and the students.
