Content
The main focus of the course is on accident theories and methods for accident investigations, where the following topics are emphasised: why accidents should be investigated, what an accident is, causes to accidents, theories about accidents and safety, accident models to be used in investigations, commonly used analytical methods (e.g. MTO and STEP), set of rules relevant for accident investigations, the accident investigation process, practical aspects when carrying out accident investigations, typical challenges when investigating accidents, information collection, interviews, and reliability of witnesses.
Learning outcome
Knowledge about:
- Accident models and theories about causes to accidents.
- The accident investigation process and how accident investigations are carried out.
- Analytical methods that are commonly used in accident investigations.
- The role of accident investigations in the work on safety and how accident investigations can contribute to improve the safety through learning.
Skills:
- Be able to assess strengths and weaknesses with different accident models and theories about causes to accidents, in addition to commonly used analytical methods in accident investigations.
- Be able to use these models, theories and methods to understand accident investigations and solve problems related to accident investigations.
General competence:
- Be able to analyse how accident models and theories influence the accident investigation process and the conclusion about the causes to accidents.
- Be able to analyse how challenges with carrying out accident investigations influence the accident investigation process.

Project work in groups with submission about 2 weeks before the exam. Both project work and the oral exam will be graded A - F and both must be passed. Each part counts 50% in the evaluation.

A mix of lectures and discussions in classroom and project work in groups. Supervision will be given when wanted.

Course assessment
There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
