Content

Organic chemistry is a fundamental part of chemistry and is essential for understanding chemical/biological reactions and processes, as well as the basic principles behind sustainability and climate as defined in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This is particularly relevant to goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. The following topics are covered: bonding relationships, isomers and stereoisomers, the most important functional groups, the IUPAC naming system for naming organic molecules, fundamental reaction mechanisms, and the relationship between structure and reactivity. The course also provides a brief introduction to spectroscopic methods and NMR.

Learning outcome

The student should understand how organic molecules are constructed from atoms and how their structure affects their reactivity. The student should be able to demonstrate, through mechanisms, how elementary reactions such as polar addition, EAS, SN1/SN2, esterifications, and acetal formations occur. This knowledge should enable the student to predict the products of reactions and propose simple syntheses of molecules. The student should be able to identify chiral centers and determine the chirality of molecules, as well as name molecules according to the IUPAC system. The student should be able to predict important IR frequencies and estimate NMR spectra from the structure of a molecule.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue will be held in all courses or in selected groups of courses. The aim is to collect student feedback for improvements during the semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be conducted at least every three years to gather students’ experiences.
