Quantitative and Qualitative Methodology (MHR201)

The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the rationale for research, research design, research methods, and data analysis. Course content will include a range of research methods covering qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches. The course will also include an exploration of approaches to data analysis appropriate for various research designs. In addition, the development of writing and presentation skills will be methodically cultivated through the completion of weekly assignments, active participation in class discussions, and the completion of a comprehensive semester project.Your master's thesis is an important academic step that requires knowledge of research methodology. This comprehensive course will teach you research strategies for the service industry and help you write your thesis.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

Upon completion of this course, the student will have

  • advanced knowledge of the planning, design and implementation of service business research projects.
  • specialised insights into the different service research designs suitable for different needs for empirical information.
  • in-depth theoretical knowledge of measurement theory and validation techniques, as well as procedures and statistical methods primarily used to test the validity and reliability of empirical data.
  • in-depth knowledge of available statistical techniques and for which research questions and data they are applicable.
  • Insights into how data from digital information systems can be used in the ongoing market monitoring of a service company.

Skills:

On completion of this course, participants will be able to

  • plan, design and implement advanced business research projects, both in a national and international context.
  • evaluate the quality of data and analysis conducted by others - analyse quantitative data using advanced multivariate techniques.
  • draw conclusions and plan activities based on service organization data and identify related challenges.
  • present service organization analysis in a way that translates advanced research into business implications.

Folder exam that contains the following:
• A term paper submitted in groups of a maximum of three or four students.
• 3 case assignments submitted during the semester.

The final folder accounts for 100 percent of the grade.In case of a resit exam, the student must retake the complete folder with all its different parts.

Coursework requirements

Each student must present case solutions in class according to a pre-assigned schedule, and actively participate in classroom discussions.

Method of work

The course is run on the basis of case-based teaching, where every weekly meeting is dedicated to discussing a business case. To prepare students for the analyzes necessary to solve the cases, lab exercises will be offered on a regular basis. Students work in groups to solve the cases, but discussions in classes are based on individual participation.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course supervisor, the student union representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital subject evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
