The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers four study programs and our students can choose from more than 35 science subjects. In addition, we offer PhD programs in information technology, mathematics and physics.
For international students, we offer an English-taught master programme in Mathematics and Physics.
Physics and mathematics form the basis for all technological development. Students in the master's program in mathematics and physics gain advanced knowledge of modeling of mathematical-physical systems.
Information Technology, Mathematics and Physics is a subfield within the doctoral programme in Science and Technology at UiS. The subfield has specialisations in cybernetics / signal processing; computer science; physics and mathematics. The doctoral programme is linked to the research within each of these specialisations.
Our research environment collaborates across fields to contribute to the development of mathematics, statistics and physics.
The department of Mathematics and Physicsh has six main research areas: algebraic geometry, complex and harmonic analysis, material physics, mathematical physics, mathematical statistics and theoretical particle physics and cosmology.

Algebraic geometry is a part of mathematics that is classically devoted to the study of the solution sets of polynomial equations in several variables, so-called algebraic variables. Modern algebraic geometry also includes the study of more abstract structures.
Complex and harmonic analysis
The field of complex analysis focuses on the study of calculus involving complex numbers.
The group within mathematical statistics concentrates on the following research fields: Analysis of course data, statistical process control, medical statistics, statistical modeling of meteorological processes, calculation-oriented statistics and econometric time series analysis.
In the broadest sense, mathematical physics can be interpreted as the application of strict mathematical methods to problems in physics.
The research activities within the materials physics group are focused on the structure and dynamics of new materials.
Theoretical particle physics and cosmology
As far as we know, the quarks of the standard model, leptons and gauge bosons are the basic building blocks in matter. Matter can exist in different forms, phases that occur at different temperatures and densities. And just as water can melt, boil or freeze, matter can also undergo phase transitions due to temperature changes.
We have applied for centre of excellence (SFF) with Quark-Lab: Centre for fundamental physics research.
