Deep decarbonization of energy systems is a global challenge we face today, where use of innovative energy conversion technologies will play a central role.

The objective of the Energy Systems Engineering Group at the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering is to contribute to the “global energy transition” and “clean and affordable energy for all” via conducting multidisciplinary research and education on various sustainable energy solutions, including but not limited to energy conversion technologies (ranging from decentralized combined heat and power systems to large-scale low carbon technologies), energy systems integration covering different energy vectors and carriers such as heating, cooling, power, and hydrogen in industrial applications, performance monitoring and fault diagnostics.

The group uses state-of-the-art facilities, tools, and methods such as highly fuel flexible micro gas turbine test rigs, advanced shallow geothermal energy laboratory, physical models, artificial intelligence-based models, and integrated design, control, and optimization algorithms. The group focuses on developing innovative techno-economically viable energy systems and has a broad international network of academic and industrial partners.
