Since 1992 the Norwegian School of Hotel Management has offered a Master in Service Leadership in International Business and is the only institution in Norway offering this master's programme in English.

About the Study programme

 Join this exciting and vibrant programme with a strong international profile. Students will interact with professors who have strong local, national and international research networks worldwide.

The study programme aims to provide the students with high level knowledge of theory and research in the hotel, restaurant and tourism sector. Individual learning is stimulated through tailored programmes with an emphasis on problem based learning.

The programme is designed to qualify successful students to enter leadership positions in the hotel, restaurant and tourism industry.

Career prospects

This master degree programme, will for many be the start of a future career as managers. Former students from the Norwegian School of Hotel Management can be found in different management positions within the service industry. Some are hotel manager, excecutive managers within tourism, sales and marketing managers, while others are production managers, Key account managers, consultants, or project managers. In other words, the study gives you a possiblity to work with a great variety of interesting sectors, with a great variation of interesting tasks.

A candidate who has completed his or her qualification should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge skills and general competence: 

Knowledge 

A graduate from the master program Service leadership in International business has  

  • advanced knowledge on service leadership from a behavioral, economical and managerial perspective.  
  • specialized insight on a self-selected, limited service business topic as well as solid knowledge of relevant literature and research within this field.  
  • in-depth knowledge on the development of central theories and scientific methods used in leadership and management of service industries, the service economy´s role in international business, and its economic, social and environmental responsibilities locally and globally.  
  • in-depth knowledge of international service leadership challenges and business issues concerning strategic development, operations, market conditions and options, and human resource management.  
  • analytical training in different approaches to leadership in a service business, and knowledge on how to identify leadership challenges
  • thorough professional knowledge that can be used for new perspectives, entrepreneurship, and innovations within service leadership and business modelling in a contemporary international context

 

Skills

A graduate from the master program Service leadership in International business can 

  • independently analyze existing theories, methods, and interpretations on practical and theoretical problems concerning responsible service leadership and service businesses in international societies. 
  • apply evidence-based knowledge on leader / management functions, project management, service operational designs, market situations, and long-term strategic decisions.  
  • analyze and make use of primary and secondary data sources in an independent and critical way, participate in planning, implementation and control in national and international settings.  
  • apply relevant and advanced research methods of both the qualitative and quantitative kind.  
  • carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision and in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics

 

General competence 

A graduate from the master program Service leadership in International business can 

  • analyze and formulate problem statements for relevant academic, business / professional and research ethical issues.
  • contribute in team- work that may lead to new thinking and innovation processes.
  • approach complex decision-making situations within service leadership in a constructive manner 
  • based on rhetorical principles communicate, present and argue for the results of independent work, like analyses, methodology and conclusions, to various audiences like specialists and the general public.  
  • apply his/her knowledge and skills in new areas in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects. 

Academic requirements

A bachelor’s degree, which includes at least 80 ECTS credits in one or several of the following subjects, is required:
- Hotel/Hospitality Management
- Restaurant Management
- Tourism
- Business Administration
- Economy

Admission to this master's programme requires a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C (according to ECTS Standards) in your bachelor's degree.

Can I study and have a part time job? Who are the students on this program?

What are the living costs and living condition in Norway?

How much is the tuition fee?

The program is free of tuition fees.The only thing you have to pay is a fee to the student welfare organization (about NOK 700 per semester). The welfare organization will provide you with a lot of good services during your time as a student at UiS.

Can UiS give me a pre-assessment of my background before I apply?

No, the university has no capacity for this, you have to apply.

Can I study and have a part time job?

This master program expects that you put in 40-50 hours a week and you should be able to attend lectures and group meeting with fellow students. Therefore, there is only limited time for a job, but working 8-10 hours a week / in the weekends, should be OK.  Foreign students with a student visa are allowed to have a part time job in Norway.

Who are the students on this program?

Normally half of the students are Norwegians, the other half will come from all over the word – Europe, North and South America, Asia.

What does “case-based teaching" mean?

In all courses the teaching will be based on cases describing real leadership / management challenges. Students are expected to take active part in such discussion and must do several presentations as well.

The Norwegian School of Hotel Management

The Norwegian School of Hotel Management is the second oldest hotel school of the world.

The Norwegian School of Hotel Management introduced its first Hospitality program i 1912. Today the school is a part of the The University of Stavanger, and have about 550 students in its programmes.

The Norwegian School of Hotel Management offers bachelor programmes in hotel management and tourism management, a master programme in international hotel and tourism leadership and PhD programmes in management, economics and tourism.

The school is cooperating with universities all over the world for student and teacher exchange programmes and also offers exchange programmes in English.

Students from more than 40 nations from all over the world are studying at the The Norwegian School of Hotel Management.

Exchange semester:

In the 3rd semester the students can choose to study abroad for one semester and take courses equivalent to 30 credits (ECTS).

By going on exchange to one of our partner institutions abroad as part of your studies, you will have an opportunity to get a unique education. In addition to improving your career opportunities, you grow as a person and gain increased social, cultural and academic competence. In an increasingly international job market, this is a positive asset on your cv.

Choice of courses:

The students can choose courses freely if they are consistent with the master's programs learning outcomes and no not overlap with compulsory courses already included in the program.

Help for pre-approval of courses:

After the deadline for applying for student exchange, the department will assist on the process of pre-approval of courses. The department has lists over courses that have been pre-approved earlier at the various universities in order to make the pre-approval process easier.
