Vacancies in the Tunnel Safety cluster (KATS)

The Tunnel Safety cluster (KATS) at University of Stavanger wants to hire two new researchers in the project.

Both a doctoral fellow and a postdoctoral fellow are wanted. Both positions are related to computer science. Through a doctorate at KATS, you have good opportunities to develop a career in academia. At the same time the education is very relevant for most companies that work in the field of tunnel safety.

Established network

The planned positions provide a unique opportunity to take part in an already established network and collaboration between academia and the business community, in the work for increased tunnel safety.

“The planned positions are largely interdisciplinary. We want candidates with a background from information technology and / or safety. The postdoc position is related to cooperative intelligent transport systems. The PhD position is related to 5G vehicular communication,” says associate professor Naeem Khademi at University of Stavanger.

He adds that as a researcher at KATS, the candidates are also associated with the VIA cluster. Vital Infrastructure Arena (VIA) is the cluster for safe, smart, and sustainable development of roads, tunnels, bridges, and railways that provide increased safety and fewer accidents.

Industrial PhD

Khademi says that the planned PhD position can be shaped according to the template for a so-called industrial PhD, i.e., a doctoral project in a company.

“Interested companies can share their needs and suggestions for the position, and we can possibly adjust it somewhat based on the feedback. In other words, the doctoral position will be almost like an industrial PhD but cheaper for the company. In theory, the companies don’t have to pay anything for the candidate, and we can help educate a candidate who suits their needs,” says Khademi.

Both positions will be advertised at Jobbnorge December 2021.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems

The objective of the position is to strengthen research within the area of cooperative intelligent transport systems for tunnel safety, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.

You must have a PhD with a specialization relevant for the project (e.g., in computer science, electrical engineering, or intelligent transport systems). The PhD thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.

The applicant is required to document research experience within at least one of the following subjects:

  • cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS and CCAM)
  • decision support systems for safety critical systems
  • artificial intelligence (i.e., machine/deep learning) and automation for automotive and/or transport  
  • digital twins
  • vehicular and/or industrial communication
  • risk modelling for safety using sensor fusion data

Ph.D fellowship in Computer Science (5G Vehicular Communication)

With the deployment of 5G networks and prevalence of connected vehicles, novel V2X technologies and related C-ITS services are expected to emerge. The successful candidate will focus on how these can contribute to the safer roads and tunnels in near future with following general objectives:

  • Investigate the state of the art on use of novel networking technologies including 5G cellular for C-ITS on the road system and particularly in road tunnels with special focus on safety services.
  • Explore the use of 5G multiaccess edge computing (5G MEC) as storage and processing for C-ITS in road tunnels 
  • Investigate how 5G V2X connectivity can facilitate the mobility management and automation in road and tunnel systems for safety taking into consideration the paradigm shift towards emerging autonomous vehicles and smart roads/tunnels.
