The aim of the NORHED II project is to implement simulation-based education to strengthen the capacity and quality of nursing and midwifery education in Malawi and Tanzania. This will be accomplished by improving competencies and implement simulation-based education in study programs and produce research.

NORHED II Management team.

The project is supported by NORAD through the NORHED II program for the period 2021–2026.  The project is built on South-South-North partnerships and contributes to share knowledge and capacity building in simulation-based education.   

In 2023 several oral presentations and one poster have been conducted in international scientific conferences by the project managers at KUHeS and KCMUCo and PhD candidate at KUHES. The conferences attended were; the 5th Annual Gauteng Nursing Research Conference in South Africa; the 7th Annual International Technology, Education and Development Conference INTED 2023; the 15th International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies,EDULearn23 in Spain and the 7th EMA Education Conference for Midwifes in Greece.  

The four PhD candidates (two PhD candidate from KUHeS and two PhD candidate from KCMUCo) in the NORHED project focus on students’ and faculties’ perspectives on simulation-based education in education programs and nursing and midwifery clinical practice. In 2023 as a part of their PhD programs the PhD candidates spend 6 months at the University of Stavanger analyzing and writing manuscripts related to their different project, currently four manuscripts are under review in international scientific journals. Through baseline surveys and reviews knowledge and experiences about simulation-based education in nurse and midwifery programs in Malawi and Tanzania and strategies to facilitate clinical readiness in Sub-Saharan Africa when implementing simulation-based education have been analyzed and documented.      

To further strengthen nursing and midwifery lectures and clinical instructors’ competencies on simulation-based education several refreshers’ workshops had been conducted in Malawi and Tanzania in 2023. To ensure that simulation-based education will be implemented and sustained in the nurse and midwifery education programs in Malawi curriculum reviews of master programs have been finalized. Nine master students funded by the project (7 from KUHeS and 2 from KCMUCo) started their studies at KUHeS in September 2022 and have in 2023 conducted data for their thesis.   

In October 2023 the renovation of the skill laboratory at KCMUCo was completed and was officially opened. The simulation centre at KUHeS will be opened in March 2024.  

The annual and scientific meeting with all the partners and the PhD candidates took place at the University of Stavanger in September. The NORHED II week in Tanzania in October where NORAD has invited all Norwegian universities and partner institutions in Tanzania gave the PI from KCMUCo and partners from UIS the opportunity to present the project to other participants, as well as to discuss potential for synergies/collaboration across the projects/initiatives.
