The Regulations relating to studies and examinations at the University of Stavanger were adopted by the University Board on 12 June 2025. They govern the rights and obligations of students, and it is important that you familiarise yourself with the content of the regulations.

Definitions

Below is an overview of key definitions used on UiS’s websites and in the study regulations.

Credits (ECTS) – A measure of workload for individual components of a programme of study. 60 credits correspond to one year of full-time study, with a standard workload of 1,500–1,800 hours.

Course – The smallest credit-bearing unit of instruction that can be part of a programme of study.

Specialisation – A group of courses defined in the academic or study plan as being academically related, which may complement each other in such a way that they build upon and go beyond the basic level of a subject.

Independent work – A final project or thesis that is part of a degree examination. The work may be completed individually or in a group.

Programme of study – A combination of courses leading to specified learning outcomes.

Degree – An education of a specified scope and composition that entitles the holder to use a specific title. The degree is documented in a diploma.

Study plan – A plan adopted by the institution describing the learning outcomes, academic components, structure, and implementation of a programme of study.

Subject curriculum – A study plan that is a local adaptation of a framework plan determined by the Ministry.

Framework plan – A national plan adopted by the Ministry describing the learning objectives, academic components, structure, and implementation of profession-oriented programmes of study.

Adapted learning and assessment methods – Within the overall framework of a programme of study, it must be ensured that students are provided with adapted and varied learning methods and forms of assessment in each programme.

Learning platform – A digital system for organising and administering actors, activities, processes, and elements in the planning and delivery of studies, e.g., Canvas, Fronter, etc.
