Join us to learn more about how nature-based solutions can advance urban sustainability.

Published Updated on

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are increasingly recognised as essential tools in advancing the green transition, particularly within urban environments. By harnessing ecological processes—such as those found in green roofs, permeable pavements, and constructed wetlands—NBS offer integrated benefits including enhanced stormwater management, increased biodiversity, improved air quality, and mitigation of urban heat island effects.

This presentation examines the strategic role of NBS in urban-scale sustainability initiatives, well-being and education, highlighting their potential to deliver environmental, social, educational and economic benefits. Through a series of case studies, including initiatives focused on children's environmental education, the development of a green university campus, and urban circularity models, the presentation illustrates how NBS can be effectively implemented across diverse contexts.  Furthermore, the presentation discusses the broader societal impacts of NBS in supporting the green transition.

The presentation also outlines how the University of Stavanger can contribute to this transformation through research, innovation, and community engagement. The talk is held by Ari Krisna Mawira Tarigan, Professor at the Department of Safety, Economics, and Planning, UiS and Johana Evelyn Montalvan Castilla, Associate Professor at the Department of Early Childhood Education, UiS.
