Hege Langli Ersdal talks about the life-saving research project she leads.

Anesthesiologist and researcher at Stavanger University Hospital and professor UiS, Hege Langli Ersdal, has led the global Safer Births program since it was launched in 2009. Together with Laerdal Global Health, SAFER and healthcare workers in Tanzania, the researchers have developed new technology that provides far more reliable measurements of fetal and newborn heart rate. They have also created innovative training models and strategies for simulation: a pregnant belly and a baby mannequin used in the training of healthcare workers worldwide.
Since its inception, the project has saved many lives. Maternal mortality during childbirth has been reduced by 75 percent, and neonatal mortality has decreased by 40 percent.
