The Greenhouse Center for Environmental Humanities extends an invitation to Ingvil Hellstrand’s inaugural professorial lecture.

Ingvil Hellstrand was promoted to Professor of Interdisciplinary Gender Studies at the University of Stavanger from August 2024. Join us to celebrate this achievement with this open lecture.

In her research, Ingvil Hellstrand aims to make connections between speculative storytelling and knowledge production. She describes herself as indebted to feminist philosophy of science and feminist posthumanities, where a range of thinkers connect normative structures of differentiation and discrimination to the need for counter-narratives and new imaginaries in our Anthropocene time. In this lecture, Hellstrand draws on her favourite empirical material, namely science fiction—a genre that highlights the boundaries for what is considered “normal” or “neutral”, be it bodies, knowledges or infrastructures. She will argue that speculative storytelling are practices and strategies to challenge established structures of differentiation, and work to (re-)imagine and re-story what counts as knowledge, and as knowing subjects.
Light refreshments and vegan snacks will be served.
Registration by Sunday, 7 September 2025.
