Introduction

The registration deadline for the practical training course is 20. August. The application is assessed by the faculty, and approved if the prescribed prerequisites are met.

Content

This course is a practical training course where the the student participates in a professional environment outside the university, for example in a company.The student must find a workplace or project that is interested in accepting a student in the company's ongoing work. Internships in a student project must be agreed with the responsible staff of the study program. The course aims to give the student practical experience and to enable immersion into selected topics connected to the company's practice. An agreement between the university and the company, describing tasks and supervision has to be signed.

Learning outcome

The course is a supplement to other courses, and when the student has completed the course, the following lelarning oiucomes should be achieved:

Knowledge:

  • Explain work tasks and working methods in the company
  • Reflect on the practical challanges n the work life

Skills:

  • Increased ability for professional colloboration
  • Immersion in given topics and to be able to present these in a convincing way
  • Familiarize with assigned work tasks and apply methods from the study to solve these problems

General competence:

  • Reflect around own knowledge, learning and team work abilities
  • Follow demands and requirements in the working life

Required prerequisite knowledge

Must have completed a minimum of 90 credits according to approved education plan. Other academically relevant courses outside the education plan can also be approved after assessment by the department.

In addition, the following courses must be passed: BYG140, BYG150, BYG205, BYG200, BYG220

The student must prepare a report on their internship work (incl. a signed timetable).

The student must spend 250 - 300 working hours on the course in total. The student must submit a signed timesheet together with the report.

No continuation options are offered on the report. Students who do not pass the subject must take the subject again next time the subject has regular teaching

Coursework requirements

Practice oral presentation
The student will give a compulsory oral presentation that must be approved min. 3 weeks prior to submission of report.

Practical and /or theoretical work in external institution.

Using AI to support learning and study activities

AI tools may be used in BYG390 as a learning aid, but must never substitute for the professional experience and reflection the course builds — the practical work at the host organisation and your own critical reflection on that practice is precisely what you must master yourself. Productive uses include asking AI to explain a professional concept you encounter on placement, to help structure and improve the language of a report you have written yourself, or to prepare for work tasks. AI should not write the reflective report for you. Any use of AI must always be disclosed in your submission as specified in the syllabus, and you remain responsible for critically evaluating whatever the AI produces.

Practice

Practical training is compulsory. The student has to submit a certified timesheet in order to get the practical training approved. Practical training has to be approved in order to be able to submit a final report and receive assessment in the course.

There must be a formal contract between the practical training institution, the student and UiS. This must be signed and submitted to the course coordinator by September 1st.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue will be held in all courses or in selected groups of courses. The aim is to collect student feedback for improvements during the semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be conducted at least every three years to gather students’ experiences.
