Introduction

This course provides engineering students interested in energy systems with essential knowledge of major energy systems, including how they work, how they are quantitatively evaluated, what they cost, and what is their benefit or impact on the environment.

Content

NB! This is an elective course and may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students are enrolled by August 20th.

Students will study the basic theory of conventional and renewable energy systems and determine the system efficiencies. Additionally, students will become familiar with the engineering economic tools for economic evaluation of the energy systems projects. The emphasis of the course is on the application of quantitative engineering techniques to energy systems, so that a comparative analysis of various options can be realized.

Learning outcome

At the end of the course:

  • The student will become familiar with the importance of the energy systems, trends in world energy use and associated challenges.
  • The student will learn essentials of various conventional and renewable energy systems and engineering calculations of their performance and economics.
  • The student will learn the comparative analysis of various energy systems. The comparisons will include both performance and cost evaluation.

Using AI to support learning and study activities

AI tools may be used in ENP150 as a learning aid, but must never substitute for the understanding of energy-systems engineering the course builds — analysing conventional and renewable energy systems by hand is precisely what you must master yourself, and the exam is written by hand. Productive uses include asking AI to explain a concept (e.g., which trends shape global energy consumption, how an energy system works, or what distinguishes energy-system performance), to check the setup of a problem you have solved yourself, or to generate practice problems for self-testing before the exam. You remain responsible for critically evaluating whatever the AI produces, and any use of AI in assessed work must follow the course's guidelines.

Open for

Open course for all who meet the requirements for general university admissions certification (GSK) and Engineering requirement.

Admission requirements

General university admissions certification (GSK) and Engineering requirement.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue will be held in all courses or in selected groups of courses. The aim is to collect student feedback for improvements during the semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be conducted at least every three years to gather students’ experiences.
