Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • To define a balanced reaction equation
  • To explain the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reaction, including the source of released heat and its relation to the first law of thermodynamics
  • To define a solution and explain the criterion for solution formation
  • To describe an ideal gas
  • To describe the meaning of a reaction at chemical equilibrium and interpret La Châtelier’s principle
  • To define a base and acid using Brønsted-Lowry and Arrhenius theories, and to define pH
  • To define the acid and base constants
  • To identify reduction and oxidation half-reactions and explain their parallel occurrence in redox reactions
  • To define electrolysis and explain the difference between galvanic and electrolytic cells
  • To define aliphatic and aromatic compounds and name such compounds
  • To recognize petroleum chemicals and understand their role in automobile emissions
  • To give examples of pollutants and explain why they are harmful to human health

Skills

  • To use a balanced reaction equation in stoichiometric calculations
  • To calculate the concentration of a solution in various units (molarity, mass-percent)
  • To employ the ideal gas law to calculate gas pressure
  • To calculate the pH of a solution using definitions of strong acids and bases
  • To employ acid and base constants to calculate the pH of solutions containing weak acids and bases

General Competence

Using AI to support learning and study activities

AI tools may be used in KJE101 as a learning aid, but must never substitute for the chemistry understanding the course builds — balancing reaction equations and doing stoichiometric and thermochemical calculations yourself is precisely what you must master yourself. Productive uses include asking AI to explain a concept (e.g., how a reaction equation is balanced, what distinguishes an exothermic from an endothermic reaction, or how chemical equilibrium is calculated), to check the setup of a problem you have solved yourself, or to generate practice problems for self-testing before the exam. You remain responsible for critically evaluating whatever the AI produces, and any use of AI in assessed work must follow the course's guidelines.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue will be held in all courses or in selected groups of courses. The aim is to collect student feedback for improvements during the semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be conducted at least every three years to gather students’ experiences.
